The 2012 ‘Teaching Skills’ Competition took place in Hovd city from October 23rd – 24th.This competition is an important event in the calendar year for every primary and secondary school teacher. Earlier in the quarter, the competition was held within every school in Hovd and then the winning teachers were sent to Hovd city for the aimag level competition.I (Bob) sat in many of the lessons taught by the English teachers and I saw many different methodologies in use, lots of useful and effective warm-up exercises as well as several good ideas for exercises which concerned the main learning objectives of the lessons. The assessment panel was made up of members from the aimag department of Education and culture. They judged the competitors on 10 different criteria including methodology, use of time, engagement of students, lesson materials etc. As teacher development in Mongolia improves from year to year it seems that the quality of the lessons also rises and the competition among the teachers becomes sharper.Of the 24 teachers participating in the competition on the aimag level this year, 6(or 24% of them) were English teachers. So congratulations to : Urjinhand - Bulgan 1; Uranchimeg - Zereg; Gundegmaa - School #2; Nyamhuu - School #6;Tsendayush – Altai; Altantuya – Tsetseg for winning the competition in your own schools and then representing them in Hovd by giving a great effort during the competition! A special commendation is due also to Gundegmaa from School #2 for getting fifth place this year, well done!
